Yahoo! News Message Board - Romney to Back Plan to Ban Gay Marriage

Governor Romney has retreated from a civil liberties compromise, obviously reading either his conscience or the polls and abandoning traditional leadership in protecting civil rights through positive constitutional amendment and court construal of civil rights. Instead, he now appears hell-bent or honor bound to place the issue before the people of Massachusetts in a backing of an amendment that would ban same sex civil unions.
Gov. Romney should know the liklihood of success of measure which would seek to reverse a well founded recognition of equal protection to a minority by a populist salient such as the Initiative.
It is liklely that in the old American Dixie South, such a measure would have been used, and absent Federal intervention, defeated equal rights protections against racism.

Let us hope that the Governor leads in good conscience, and that the issue which baits populist fears of traditional marriage diminishment, can sustain an objective debate on the issue of providing a sex-neutral marriage equivalency coupled with a reaffirmation of heterosexual marriage; rather than a gay-bashing and fear-mongering.

As a Governor which I voted for, I give him the benefit of the doubt in an honest belief that the people should be more bradly consulted on an issue of this material controversy. However, I would hope the Governor can join an objective debate on the merits of a minority in need of protection, and full rights enfranchisement.
As to my personal position .. I have for a long time, advocated a status and form of marriage called 'sex-neutral' in place of or joining the two common forms of state sanctioned marriage: secular & religious; neither replacing, exceeding, nor diminishing the two latter heterosexual forms. Sex of parties or sexual consumation are removed as factors in the marriage -- resulting in a voluntary civil union of adults.

The Governor has been mislead on matters in this area before, including the use of a 1916 Act which bars the state from performing marriage which would be illegal elsewhere. (Really? including miscegenation, age, ect; remarriage after divorce)
