WINDOWS 8.1 GLITCH Resolution

Windows 8.1 ASUS LapTop computer developed a “kernal’ fault, and a recurrent un-locable .dll file WerConCpl.dll in the last few days; so this blogger chose  to go at it.  Reading about the WerConCPL.dll, the file is described as a leftover from Windows 7, and a non decipherable  non necessity in Windows 8 & 8.1.  Other sources on line described it as a “Trojan hider”, a virus.  In any case after a few attempts to find it it the file system and the Registry, a system restore and “refresh” of the OS was selected, and as it turned out an opt secondly for a thorough Factory Reset.

These restores/resets are done by Windows 8.1 rules, and they work well usually with the intent to save reinstallation of “updates” etc in a good cost effective system.   This version of Windows does not do quite the same system restore of old, but scans and repairs unit files, re contributing the missing file or fixing them to save the whole reset.

The WebConCpl.dll commenced when the first “refresh” or restore was tried.  The IE-11 would not set properly, and Alert  boxes repeatedly warned of the missing WerConCPL.dll.  Further, the pages and cross functions (ie in & to desktop) would not stop closing up.

Hence a full Factory Reset (full OS rebooting) was elected.

In defense of Windows and the system, a media suite for an optical drive was installed, then not needed and de-installed.  Sometimes the de-installations  remove elements of the OS unintentionally.

The Factory Reset of Windows 8.1 returns the system to Windows 8.0, with advisory to afterward re-elect the UpGrade to Windows 8.1.  One is also advised to save additional program App files (such as Adobe apps, etc on another drive).   When the Factory Reset finishes and re-installs itself as if just purchased, the trouble begins.

One is advised to “go to the STORE” and elect the Windows 8.1 UpGrade from the newly refurbished Windows 8.0.  Sadly, the re-installation, may be out of time, and the FREE WIndows 8.1 Upgrade election is not to befound in the STORE.  It is free for Windows 8.0 existing users, and this includes the new Xmas purchases still using Windows 8.0.  (Free means one doesn’t pay for the software)

One may wait or push the necessary Windows Updates, which will re-create the Free Windows UpGrade to 8.1 option, or choose merely one update file mentioned in the Windows 8.1 UpGrade FAQS. For genuine help here, and it is in the FAQs, the missing Windows Update File # KB 2871389 – frees the FREE Windows 8.1 UpGrade for Windows 8.0 pre-existent users.  Sad news again: unless you can find it and sort/select it as a unit in the Update Option in the desktop mode, the PC will attempt to download and install 89-90 of them.  Further, the time may be congested.

Breaking the automaticity of the updates can work, if you make a proximate time for download and install, and so will the individual selection of that file.  Good Luck and Good Timing. In this blogger’s case, a 5pm maintenance download and install was the closest attendant hour.  The individual unit file selection option worked, and was 95% downloaded, when the 5pm hour struck and assumed all of the update files.  So that was that.  Laptop is all configured with updates now after the upgrades were installed.  Still have the return to the Windows 8.1 upgrade to go.  Will let you know about that .dll file and the re-upgrade to Windows 8.1.   Had good time and success with the 8.1 and did it in October.

ciao

SO far. so good. The update file caused a display and release in the Windows APP Store (also a working link on the normal WIndows home site), but the system chose to stack the task with 22 automatic standard APPS updates. More later. It's downlaoding though.

Windows 8.1 System is installing and downloading and checking compatibility. Cell-Phone factory resets definitely are faster & inspire the re-boot/reset - but those impeding updates and the time which could have been saved . Cloud is used to save and transfer data.

Windows takes yoyu "back" on the "factory reset" to at least the old Windows 8.0 one had before the Upgrade to 8.1; hence the following flow of updates including the upgrade link.

Windows 8.1 has loaded and installed and restarted the PC and is "setting up". Hopefully the WerConCpl.dll factor and the other "kernal" alert ote will be erased by the re-install. "Kernal" replies to the corn grain like blossoming of the OS after a lodging and installation

Restore had an error in installation, or the installation failed; and the Windows 8.1 OS previously installed before factory reset could not be reconfigured. Will try the upgrade download and reinstallation again. System will always revert to an operating Windows 8

Good re-install of Windows 8.1 on second pass. A reminder, that failed installation reverts to Windows * or initial Windows or 8.1 OS when purchased
